I just found out last night that my dad had a heart attack on Tuesday.
His girlfriend emailed me to let me know. Supposedly he has been feeling "yucky" for the last few days and thought it was just because of his elevated blood sugar levels. Well then Tuesday evening he said he had felt heavy weight on his chest, and then sharp pain that lasted about 10-15 minutes, but then went away. He didn't think anything of it until she talked to him the next day. So he went into his doctor yesterday and they did an EKG, which didn't show anything, and drew some blood, which showed elevated levels of something that indicated that he had a heart attack. So his DR sent him straight to the emergency room for more tests. Sure enough, the tests revealed that he did have a heart attack, but they are not sure if it was one big event or a series of smaller ones. So he was transferred to another hospital to get a heart catheter put in place. He'll have that procedure done this morning around 11am.
I'm a little scared. He's approaching his 70's- his birthday is September 20 and I think he'll be 66 or 67 this year (can't remember). But he's always made light of his health for as long as I can remember. I so want to go visit him, but 1. I can't fly right now, 2. I'm so close to my due date that I run the risk of going into delivery up there, and 3. it's about a 10-12 hour drive. He's in a hospital outside of Portland, OR. My sister is closer, she's in Portland, but I don't know if she's going to be able to see him since she doesn't drive. He normally goes to visit her once a week or every two weeks, and has been helping her out a little financially while she is in school. So I'm a little worried about her as well. She's 25, so I know she's capable of taking care of herself. She's just my little sis!!
I couldn't sleep last night after reading that email. I'm going to try and call him this afternoon at the hospital and see how he is. _________________ Kira Sandoval---

Well, he's home from the hospital. I just got off the phone with him.
He had 50% blockage on the left side of his heart and an area on the lower right side that had 100% blockage. Luckily, the doctors say that he won't need surgery based on where the blockages were. He'll be on some medication for quite a while, and has been told to loose 60lbs!
Unfortunately, he also has some kidney problems that they detected as well. Seems like he's had diabetes for at least the last 10 years but only during the last two or three had he noticed spikes in his levels. Of course, he didn't think anything of them. But the doctors have put him on an oral insulin, which he says has helped stabilize him over the last few days.
He seems upbeat that he will get better. Sounds like he has a great group of friends there that will make sure he follows the dr's orders and exercise more, loose the excess weight, and eat better.
I'm glad that he's well. I think I'll be able to sleep better tonight! _________________ Kira Sandoval---

(Not so sure I'll sleep better tonight, it's so hot & humid. We had one of those 100 degree days again.

This extra warm weather is killing me!!! Not to mention that with a certain medication that my DR prescribed me I'm sweating more than normal...
My dad had been on beta blockers for quite a number of years, but the DR's think that the one he's been on may have been one factor in causing the attack. So they gave him something else, which he says seems to be working better already. _________________ Kira Sandoval---

Awww- you guys are on the coast too, I see- you're probably having the same type of weather we've been having. Hoping that it cools down for you guys down there. We got plenty of rain today and temps are back in the 60's so that feels really good.
Hope you get feeling better Kira, not to much further to go & the little one will be here & I'm glad to hear your Dads doing much better, that's always a plus!! God Bless you all.
